The September 2024 issue of ACerS Bulletin is now available online.

In this month’s issue, we look at approaches to the treatment and reuse of waste materials. The cover story by Collin Wilkinson, Arron Potter, and Gabrielle Gaustad describes the diverse factors that hamper glass waste recycling and discusses solutions to more effectively process and reuse this waste stream. A second feature article by Brian Gorman, Jim Welte, David Nowacek, and Alexis Sitchler explores the possibility of sequestering carbon emissions in clay products. The last feature article overviews the range of technical assistance and workforce development resources offered by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office to help manufacturers pursue energy and resource efficiency.

In addition to the feature stories, the “Deciphering the Discipline” column by Nabil Ashraf Shuvo considers the prospects of nanoparticle-enabled magnetic separation in nuclear waste management. Meanwhile, the “Business and Market View” column overviews global markets for environmental remediation technologies.

This issue contains the annual announcement of ACerS Awards of 2024. In addition to this year’s Distinguished Life Members—Lisa C. Klein and Zuhair A. Munir—the Society will elevate 13 members to Fellow and recognize many more outstanding members with various Society, Division, and Class awards during the ACerS Annual Honor and Awards Banquet Reception on Oct. 7, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Also included in this issue is the latest Ceramic & Glass Manufacturing, which explores the practices that companies are adopting to ensure environmentally friendly and cost-effective manufacturing. The cover story contains interviews with Carl Sorrell (IntoCeramics, vice president), John Snoddy (Kyanite Mining Corp., environmental and safety director), and Richard Goodhead (Lucideon, chief marketing officer) about their experience working with ceramics and glass industries to help ensure current needs are being met without compromising the ability to meet future demand. An accompanying article by Nancy Bunt provides updates on a decarbonization project that multinational group Imerys S.A. is running at its Andersonville plant in Georgia. Another feature story by Mark Whitehouse describes a study led by Alfred University glass scientists to effectively wash and reuse wine bottles.

Finally, learn about a new “Sustainable Horizons” symposium taking place at MS&T24 in “Letter to the Editor.”
